Accommodation in Canberra

March 21, 2012

Before I get onto the issue of accommodation – a quick word about Facebook.

I have not been able to figure out a way for those of you who don’t use Facebook to be advised when I have posted something on the Facebook page. So for any major announcements (such as this one) I will continue to put a post up here as well for your information.

In the meantime, there will be shorter posts on Facebook more regularly, and you can choose to check in there every now and then as you like.

Now! Accommodation!

The venue for the Crafting Session this year, on Saturday 9th June, is the Crowne Plaza Canberra. This is a great location – within a stone’s throw of both the Handmade Market and the Shop Handmade.

The hotel has offered a discounted rate of $230 per room per night for a superior room, and there are rooms available with two double beds if you would like to share with a friend.

To book one of these rooms, you can call the hotel on 1300 662 218 and quote the code SEW call the hotel on 02 6247 8999, press 0 for operator (do not press 1 for new reservations) and asked to be put through to in-house reservations. Quote the code SEW.

These rooms are limited and this offer will expire 14 days before the event.

Alternatively, you might like to join with a group of friends and book a room at the Canberra YHA which is also very close to the Crowne Plaza, the Handmade Market and the Shop Handmade.

We’re very lucky to have two great accommodation choices so close to where all our activities will be on the weekend!

If you are travelling with your family to Canberra for the long weekend, and these two options don’t suit, I have stayed with my two little munchkins at the Quality Suites Clifton on Northbourne and found it more than suitable for family accommodation with separate bedrooms. This hotel is NOT within walking distance of the Sew It Together venues, but it is a very good option if you have your family with you. I am going to give them a call to see if they might do a special rate for us – will come back to you on that.

Before you start booking flights, all the times for the weekend are not yet locked in.

If you can be at the Crowne Plaza by 12:00pm to depart on the Friday Shopping Trip, then you will be fine. Please allow plenty of time to get through the airport, get your bags, get to the city and find somewhere to store your bags for the afternoon. I would advise flying in no later than 10:30am.

On the Sunday, if you can book a return flight that leaves Canberra no earlier than 4:00pm, you will also be fine to participate fully in Sunday’s workshop.

Or you can contain your excitement and wait until I have confirmed times. Up to you!

Accommodation – Sydney

January 12, 2011

As you know The Menzies Hotel have offered discounted rates for accommodation for Sew It Together attendees, but I do understand that the room rates there are still quite expensive.

Here are some other potential accommodation venues, close-ish to the Menzies, for you to check out if you haven’t already booked somewhere:

  • The YHA at Sydney Harbour is just about the cheapest accommodation you’ll find anywhere reasonably near to The Menzies that’s decent and clean. If you are prepared to share, there are quite a few rooms already being organised by SIT ladies – if you are interested in sharing, see the Sew It Together group on Facebook, or leave a comment here and you might be able to find some others to share a room with. A bed in a 4-share room with private bathroom will cost you $96 for two nights. A twin/double room with private bathroom will cost you $314 for two nights.
  • The Wynyard Travelodge at York Street appears to be about the same cost as The Menzies, but last year they did have some specials, only available to book on Tuesdays, where the price was significantly reduced. Worth keeping an eye on.
  • The Mantra on Kent is a slightly longer walk to The Menzies, but I visited there late last year when some friends were staying there, and I thought the rooms were pretty good for the price. It’s not a bargain, but it is clean and comfortable.
  • Napoleon on Kent is a very cheap hotel which is pretty close to The Menzies, but it does get mixed reviews on Tripadvisor. It is under a freeway, and could be quite noisy. I have not been there. I only mention it here, because it is very cheap – if budget is your #1 priority and the YHA doesn’t suit. Cost looks like approx $310 for two nights.

That’s about all I can come up with! If the YHA and the Menzies don’t suit, go and have a look at www.wotif.com for those dates, click on the brown “Show a map” button, and see what you can find  – whether you want to be close to The Menzies (which is right at Wynyard Station) or not is completely up to you!

Good luck!

Accommodation

November 4, 2010

The Menzies Hotel have offered reduced rates for accommodation for Sew It Together 2011 participants.

For the Friday night, the current public rate is $259.00; you can pay $224.00.

For the Saturday night, the current public rate is $389.00; you can pay $299.00.

These rates are available until 25 February 2011. After that you can just book the best rate of the day.

The hotel has limited (10) twin rooms available at this time (ie 2 x single beds, or 2 x double beds). If you are interested in sharing a room with someone and want one of these, I strongly suggest that you book sooner rather than later!

To book, call The Menzies Hotel on (02) 9299-1000 and quote code 110325SEW. This code will only be valid for direct calls to the hotel.

I’m in the process of putting together some information about alternative places to stay if you find this is out of your budget. Stay tuned!

Booking Your Accommodation

January 26, 2010

I know that there are a few of you who are keen to book your accommodation sooner rather than later, so here is how you can do it.

  1. Call Citigate Melbourne on 03 9654 6888, stay on the line and ask for Chloe Hughes. (Don’t ask for reservations, Chloe is the Events Co-Ordinator and knows all about Sew It Together).
  2. Give all your details to Chloe and she will book your accommodation.
  3. Hang up and start getting excited.

That’s all! How easy is that?

Hotel, schmotel

December 18, 2009

I received a somewhat distressing email this morning from the Radisson to say that they were terribly sorry, but they had double booked our room and there was a wedding reception booked into OUR room and could we reschedule the date?

Well, no, I said and thank you very much. I was polite in my reply, but I think I was less polite to my poor computer screen.

But look, Melbourne might have a million and one great restaurants, but it also has a million and one great hotels and it didn’t take me long to find an alternative venue.

Our event will now be held at the Citigate Melbourne hotel. It has recently been refurbished and the prices are good and the events co-ordinator is lovely and triple-checked the date upon my insistence with good grace and humour.

The location is excellent. Opposite Flinders St Station, and easy walking distance to Federation Square, Southbank, Melbourne’s shopping district, Tessuti and Buttonmania.

Citigate is charging us purely on a per person basis with no room hire charge and the cost is $55 per person for the same catering inclusions.

We have lost the head and shoulder massage which the Radisson was providing, but if you had your heart set on that (oh, I did!) let me know and I will talk to the Citigate about getting someone in.

I am going to continue to collect $35 as the deposit, as so many of you have already paid that amount and I want to be consistent. But it’s nice to know now that the maximum cost will be $55.

I have updated all the pages on the right with the new information. Also, the hotel rooms are cheaper. Win, win, win.

I am sorry about the change. I hope it doesn’t inconvenience anyone who was coming from the other side of the city or anyone who particularly wanted to stay at the Radisson.

I promise that the Saturday Crafting Session will be much more fun than that stupid wedding.

See you at the Citigate!
