Isn’t there lots of great stuff happening here at the SIT blog? I might be overwhelmed with things to do, but it’s really nice to stop and smell the roses, and today that means stopping and looking at the gorgeous creations of our very own Sydney gal, Katia from Plushka’s Craft.
Katia (also known as Plushka) started her little craft venture, when, after a year of working with numbers and paperwork all day (she helps her husband run his helicopter business!) she felt the urge to spend some time expressing herself creatively. Now she works all day, and crafts at night, making hand stitched and unique items that are just so pretty.
Craft was always part of Katia’s Russian heritage, and making things was a part of her life since she started cross-stitch classes at the age of 12. Her grandmother loves baking, and one of Katia’s favourite recipes is ‘Plushka’, a sweet and savoury pastry which has a pretty heart shape. Katia chose this name for her craft business as a symbol of her love for everything made by hand.
That’s how Plushka started making felt toys, accessories, homewares and cross-stitched items. She tries to use cross-stitch in her designs where possible, as that is the first craft she learned and it quickly became her passion. It’s a very traditional type of embroidery that she hopes people will see more as cute and decorative than old-fashioned.
I am very lucky to have some lovely items by Plushka in my sewing room, but I’m not there to take photos and show you. You can see one of Plushka’s owls just to the left of Smith in this photo of Amy’s taken in my sewing room….
And given that I have just announced the name tag swap for this year, have a look at this beauty that Katia made for Susie last year!
Unfortunately, Katia won’t be able to make the Saturday Crafting Session this year at Sew It Together due to the Mathilda’s market, but she is really looking forward to meeting everyone at Saturday’s dinner.
We’ll miss her on Saturday (I’d kill for the blanket that she crocheted last year in Melbourne – you should have seen how pretty it was!), but she’s an absolute gem to still offer to sponsor Sew It Together! Plushka is giving 3 felt owl kits as prizes at the Saturday Crafting Session and they include detailed instructions and all materials required to make one of these baby owls!
Thank you so much Katia! These are fabulous prizes and will go to very happy homes!
